“The travel guide is more of a travel companion that is familiar with the area, but we were ok with that. The transport was with a fairly new and comfortable bus, and although the trip from Milan took 3 hours (with one 10 min. stop) it was worth it. Be aware that although the guide has train tickets for everyone, they do not include use of bathrooms at the stations in the Cinque Terre, so you have to pay if you need to use it.
